Belem Tower (Torre de Belém)

Todays Lisbon's most remarkable symbol borrows its charm to the riverside of Belem since the time when the portuguese were leaders in sea navigation. Belem Tower welcomes every ship coming in Lisbon, as it does since the 16th century.

This fortification was integrated in the defensive plan on the northern shore of Tejo river, along with many other small fortresses that can still be found today. Plans to build it were done at the time of King D. João II (1481-1495), but the construction started only with the kingdom of following D. Manuel I (1495-1521) in 1514. Under the project of the architect Francisco de Arruda, it was placed in the former location of a docked armed ship that defended the city. Its construction was finished in 1520.

Along the years, this structure lost its original defensive purpose. It was used as a border registry, lighthouse and even prison.

It is a national monument since 1907 and is classified as Humanity Cultural Heritage by UNESCO since 1983.


Jerónimos Monastery (Mosteiro dos Jerónimos)

King Manuel, the first, started the construction of this imponent building in Belem in 1501. It was finished after round 100 years and received the monks' order of Saint Jerónimo. Today it is an impressive landmark in Belem. If you have the chance to go there at night, don't miss the architectural show provided by the artificial illumination.
 

Cultural Center of Belem (Centro Cultural de Belém)

Integrated in Belem's landscape, this center gathers an exhibition center, several showrooms, bars and pleasent gardens for relaxing moments. As a permanent exhibition, CCB houses the Design Museum. On working days, there are free concerts inside from 7 to 9 pm.

Saint Jorge's Castle (Castelo de São Jorge)

Former Moor Castle, it looks over Lisbon from its highest hill offering one of the best sightseeing places in town. 
It was conquered in 1147 after a 3 months siege by king D Afonso Henriques. It has then been a royal palace and military fortress.
It is a must see in Lisbon, plus you shouldn't miss the view! On summer it hosts the beer party and several other events and art exhibitions.
